Wikipedia Assignment Turn in Thread

Congratulations! You made it!

When you are done with your Wikipedia editing assignment, write it up and post it in the thread below. Make sure you check out the requirements, but basically you need to include urls to the pages you edited, to your user page, and write up your answers to the questions raised in the assignment description.

If you have questions about the assignment, ask them in that thread. I will post an example with links in this thread, although I am not going to do the whole description part.

  1. Hi!

    here is my user page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Htw3

    My recent "user contribution" page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Htw3

Here are a couple of the pages I edited:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociological_imagination

    and
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_theory

I have actually enjoyed getting back into editing content of some pages, and hope that others have enjoyed trying it out. I look forward to making some more edits soon. [note, my comments are too brief, as an example, but they are my thoughts for now]

    1. The changes that I have made to Wikipedia are on the page titled “Social Groups”. The edits that I made were minor details about the synergy of primary groups and secondary groups. As the page was, there were distinctive definitions of the two separate groups, primary and secondary, but there was no information about how the two can be mixed. I added that although primary groups are close groups, there are secondary settings that can become primary groups, and vice versa. The example that I used in my edit was that a business, which is generally a secondary group, could care deeply about the lives and well being of their employees, which converts them to a primary group. However, on the other hand there are some families that feel hostile towards other members of their family so they may over time become secondary groups.

    2. The information that I used to make these edits was used through our notes and I also checked a book out of the library called “Sociology: The Human Science”. There is a chapter called ‘Group Interaction’ which outlines the different types of groups that one can be a part of, and how those groups all work together in society.

    3. Making these contributions was my first time using Wikipedia. I think it was a very cool experience to know that I have now helped someone who will look up information that I have contributed to make better. It is a great social tool for society and to have. I think that it’s sad how many teachers and professors look down upon Wikipedia because it truly can be a wonderful tool. Through my years of education, I always hear teachers say, “Use any source except Wikipedia”. I think that if people had a better understanding of the social structure that it holds as credibility, they would trust it more. It was a great experience doing this. This project connected to the class because it showed me that my actions effect society at a grander scale beyond myself making those revisions. People will see and use those edits in the future.

  3. 1. The contribution that I made to Wikipedia was to the Sociology of the Body article. I went to the page and saw that there wasn't a whole lot there. I didn't find any great examples of a definition for sociology of the body so instead I gave two examples that I found in our textbook. Then I showed how they related and are viewed sometimes from a sociologist's perspective. The URL to the page is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociology_of_the_body.

    2. The sources that I used to make my edits came from one medical website that I was able to find definitions from and also our textbook.

Definition of obesity. (2001). Medicine Net, Inc.www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=4607

    3. My contribution to the article was the first time I have really seriously ever done anything with Wikipedia and also my first time making a contribution to a site like this at all. I usually am not all the great with computers or technology in general, and if it isn't something basic I definitely have to be walked through the steps. I enjoyed the process, finding the information, and learning how to make the post on Wikipedia. I got a lot out of this assignment and hope that the work I put in may help someone else who views the site. My contribution pertains to class because we have talked a lot about how everyone is connected and affect one another. This post will connect to anyone who views it since I made my contribution and the topic of Sociology of the Body itself is connected in many ways to others because our view of ourselves can be affected by others view of you. This assignment was a challenge but beneficial.

  4. 1. I contributed to Wikipedia by editing the page on discrimination and the page on violence. I added to the definition of discrimination, expanding on what discrimination means in sociology. . The information I added to the page on violence, was a section I titled “Youth and Crime”, I discussed the relationship between violence, youth, and crimes. I discussed how in today’s society violence and crimes are very common among children under the age of 21, and that this can be related to the moral breakdown of youth.

    pages I edited: 1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination
    2)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence

    2. To make the edits I made I used my sociology book as my resource. The book was 7th addition, Introduction to Sociology. I used the information on page 324 and on pages 189-190.
Introduction to sociology. 7th ed. New York: W.W. Norton & Company Inc, 2009. Print.

3.I enjoyed the experience of contributing to Wikipedia. I learned a lot about how even though it may seem like all the information you need to know is on one website, such as Wikipedia, there is always more to learn in other places, you just have to look. Throughout the course, we have discussed how sociologists study the society and interactions between people and groups. Violence and discrimination relate to this because they are both influenced by groups. The youth of America is becoming more and more violent; the media is a large influence on today’s youth, with the violent movies and songs about drugs and fighting. Also, discrimination is the interactions of groups. It is one group not getting the opportunities that other groups are given.

2.I added information to sociological imagination. I used the lecture and the textbook that was assigned to us in class to contribute to the assignment. I went through and corrected spelling and grammar and then put my own knowledge into the Wikipedia page. I found alot of useful information in the book and knowledge from Ted Welser really helped.
    Resources
Introduction to Sociology. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 2009. Print.
Welser, Ted. "Sociological Imagination." Sociology 101. Ohio University. Sociology Department, Athens. 4 Jan. 2010. Class lecture.
3.The experience of editing Wikipedia was very rewarding. I was able to obtain further information on a topic I was already expected to know for class. As I was researching, I got a better understanding of the topic. I am very happy I contributed to the Wikipedia page. I am more likely to contribute more times in the future. I learned and reviewed the sociological imagination in a way I never understood before. I also researched the topic online and read many examples. It was beneficial to my studies. As I was doing the project, I thought about the ways this topic could be worded to help people understand the topic better. This connects ideas to sociology because sociologists have to use this form of thinking in order to get a proper perspective on topics and people. It also connects to the course because Ted Welser performed lectures on the topic. The research was a lot of help but the lectures and the Wikipedia page were closely related. Therefore, it was a little harder to choose information that would contribute to the page.

  6. 1) First I wanted to add some interesting statements I found in Stalking the Sociological Imagination to the differing definitions section of the sociological imagination on Wikipedia. Basically, I read that Mills chose sociology because he felt “it was a discipline which could offer the concepts and skills to expose and respond to social injustice” (Goldsen 88). He eventually became disappointed with his profession of sociology because he felt it was abandoning its responsibilities, which he criticized in his classic The Sociological Imagination. This book went on to talk about how the sociological imagination is a topic discussed in every introductory sociology class. Along with that topic came Mills and how he characterized the sociological imagination as a critical quality of mind that would help men and women “to use information and to develop reason in order to achieve lucid summations of what is going on in the world and of what may be happening within themselves.” I also wanted to expand on a paragraph another user contributed to Wikipedia, under the examples of the section; Questions raised in Mills’ book that illustrate aspects of the sociological imagination. After the user talks about ‘quality of mind’ and history and biography, I wanted to add information I found in The Sociological Imagination that stated, “In large part, contemporary man’s self-conscious view of himself as at least an outsider, if not a permanent stranger, rests upon an absorbed realization of social relativity and of the transformative power of history. The sociological imagination is the most fruitful form of this self-consciousness.”
The URL to sociological imagination is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociological_imagination, my user page is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:jn166109, and the page I edited is: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sociological_imagination&action=edit

    2) I used two books to complete this assignment. The first book I used to learn stuff for the content of my edits is Stalking the Sociological Imagination by Mike Keen. This book was very informative on the background of sociological imagination, not just Mills. The second book I used was The Sociological Imagination by C. Wright Mills. This book gave very clear definitions of the sociological imagination and gave a lot of information on Mills himself. My third resource was just the source of a quote in my first resource; Stalking the Sociological Imagination.
    3) My experience of contributing to Wikipedia was very interesting. I always knew people could edit Wikipedia, but I never actually knew how. From doing this assignment I learned how to create an account and how to edit effectively in the Wiki system. I also learned how to go to the discussion page to look for ways I can make helpful edits. Throughout this project I thought about how some people could add nonsense to these pages or at the least non-helpful information, and I wanted to make sure I made a helpful/informative addition to the page. All of the things I contributed to the page definitely related to ideas from the course because sociological imagination was a major topic we talked about in the first half of the class. Everything from self-consciousness to Mills was covered in our introductory sociology class. Overall this assignment was pretty challenging but very beneficial.

    my user contribution page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Lf933709

and the page on social conflict i worked on:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_conflict

I decided to make contributions to the “social conflict” Wikipedia page because after browsing over the article, I saw that the current information was both hard to follow and lacking in depth. We learned about social conflict in class lectures and were introduced to the influential philosopher, Karl Marx. Using my notes from class as well as new information from a helpful website on conflict theories, I was able to add a segment on Wikipedia. My segment described Marx’s ideas on conflict theory and also discussed capitalism, class distinction, and exploitation—all contributors to conflict theory that had not been mentioned prior to my edit. I also added a section on stratification that discussed Weber’s three P’s (property, prestige, power). I felt this was an important addition because it gave more detail on the stem of conflict theory because the levels of stratification are separated by control and ownership, position in community, and influence.

The websites I used for additional information about conflict theory were from a sociology department site with a page dedicated to conflict theory, along with an article on a website. Using the sources, I compared my notes taken in class with the write ups. Both sites provided a more solid foundation for my understanding of the social conflict theory. For my section on stratification I used only in class notes from February 8, 2010.
Before this project, I had never made an edit on a Wikipedia page nor did I even know how to go about doing so. Having friends who have made silly edits before that were taken down almost instantly, I assumed that any post—by anyone other than an accredited teacher or doctor to some degree—would be deleted. Starting the project, I was confused on how to begin the process but by using the detailed instructions, I was able to contribute to my page of choice. My only hesitation was sounding “professional” enough in my writing on the Wikipedia page. The pages I have gone to for help with homework in the past have been very well written and loaded with facts. Therefore, I relied on my notes to guide me and addition websites to reinforce those concepts.

From social networking on Wikipedia, to conflict theory in sociology, to technology spreading more information more quickly, my edits raised a number of topics that have been discussed over the course. Although I can’t say that I will surf Wikipedia pages looking for edits in the future, if I happen to stumble across one that needs work I will know the steps to take in order to contribute to the information already provided.

    Replacement Assignment #1

1.) This assignment was great, mostly because I have always wondered how people edited wikipedia and now I was finally getting the chance to do so myself. The contributions I made were on the sociological imagination article. I decided to contribute to this article because it seemed most relatable to the class and course work were involved in everyday. My first contribution was the addition of an additional definition or use of the sociological imagination under the differing definitions section. My edit was as follows, “There is always an urge to know the historical and sociological meaning of the singular individual in society, and particularly in the period which he has his quality and his being. To do this one may use the sociological imagination to enable ones self to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner self and external career of a variety of individuals”. I thought this was great because it not only gives an inadvertent definition but also adds a sort of use of the sociological imagination all in one. The second contribution I made was also to the sociological imagination article and was sort of funny. Upon making my first addition or edit and feeling quite confident I decided to give my edit a once over. To my disbelief I had made a typo which I thought I would have caught in the show preview stage of my edit. Quickly I went back in and made my second contribution, fixing my own typo. Whoops!

    My user page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:ah337209

Link to article I edited: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociological_imagination

2.) The source I used was the book, “The Sociological Imagination”, written by C. Wright Mills.
Citation: Mills, C. Wright. The Sociological Imagination (Oxford:Oxford University Press, 1959), 5, 7.Print.

3.) Getting the chance to work with wikipedia was amazing because like I sad before I have been waiting to do so for a long time, never knowing how easy the chance was to obtain. Through this assignment I have found that I have learned a great deal. First and foremost I learned how go through the editing process of wikipedia. This turned out to be quite a challenge but was fun at the same time. Going through the tutorial was the best part. First I learned about editing and “wikiquette” and then on to formatting, citing, talk pages and so on. Although at first the whole process was difficult to get the hang of but once I understood everything I wanted to edit more and more things. Aside from the topics relevant to the assignment and class that needed to be edited I found myself editing other topics such as lacrosse. Then it hit me. This is why wikipedia is so great and such a break through. It’s built around the love and care people have for different topics, just like the book we read in class, “Here Comes Everybody” stated in the middle of the book. I found myself going through topics I loved and cared about and paying close attention to detail, searching for edits. This is why wikipedia, even with how widespread the network is and with so much room for error, turned out to be very efficient. The people who edit the site make it efficient. After this experience I’m a big fan of the site and can’t wait to keep making edits in the future.

    The page I edited:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociological_imagination
    1. I basically added how the sociological imagination could be used when watching any mass media. I gave an example such as the differences between the Haitian earthquake and the Chile earthquake. They are different in where they hit, and how they affected the people living in the two countries. One affected the poorest country in the western hemisphere, while the other hit a country that is a little more standardized about how their building codes and safety because they have more resources available to them. I believe that I helped to expand this page by giving it another angle in a different medium.
    2. I used my textbook and used the pages that defined the sociological imagination for help with this editing of the page.
    3. I enjoyed editing this page and I felt that I was contributing to help others learn more about the sociological imagination. I may edit some others at another time. It was really fun! It gave me another resource to get information to the general public.

  11. 1.) The changes that i made to Wikipedia are on the page called “Social Exclusion.” I added a section entitled “Crime” and I added another definition for Social exclusion. I discussed how Social Exclusion related to crime.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_exclusion - This URL is where the definition was added and the crime section was added.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mm387809 - This URL is to my user page.

2.) The information that I used to edit this page was found in our class text book, “Introduction to Sociology.” There is a section in the book on page 238 titled social exclusion. In the glossary of the book there is a definition. the bibliography for the book is as follows:
Giddens, Anthony, and Anthony Giddens. Introduction to Sociology. New York: W.W. Norton &, 2009. Print.

3.) This was my first contribution to wikipedia. I thought it was a good experience to learn how Wikipedia works. I have used Wikipedia hundreds of times to look up things real quick, and it is cool to know that i can help contribute to the spread of information. Before Sociology 101 I never realized how Wikipedia actually worked. I have always used Wikipedia for research and cited the bibliographies on the wikipedia page and not the Wikipedia page itself even though I was always told to not use Wikipedia. I think Wikipedia should be able to be used for research. It’s 2010 not 1975. No one uses encyclopedias anymore. This assignment related to our class because it shows how much we have evolved through the spread and share of information. It is amazing that anyone can edit Wikipedia and help the sharing of information and learning for everyone.

1)While looking for relevant sociological articles that needed some contributions, I stumbled upon the Wikipedia article for “Social conflict.” Although I could not figure out any contributions for the opening part of the page, I thought that I could really help with the “Conflict Theory” portion. I began by taking the rough skeleton of information that was already there and elaborated on the theories of Karl Marx and Max Weber, defined the parts of “Conflict Theory” more clearly, and created a more simple article overall. However, when I returned to the article to check my work about a week later, I noticed that somebody else had actually reworked the article even more, leaving only some of my original information. The work that they added includes even more theories and explains the idea of “Conflict Theory” in much more detail. Here is the “Conflict Theory” portion of the article after I made my contribution: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_conflict#References. Unfortunately, only some of the information is mine because of the further editing. Also, here is the link to my homepage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Crollins624, which allows me, as a registered user of Wikipedia, to add more trusted information.

2)In order to edit the “Conflict Theory” article, I used references that I had easy access to. I referred back to the lecture notes from our Sociology 101 class. Along with this, I used an explanation of conflict theory in Chapter 7 of our textbook, Introduction to Sociology. Here is the citation for the textbook:
Giddens, Anthony, Mitchell Duneier., Richard P. Appelbaum, and Deborah Carr, eds. 2009. Introduction to sociology. 7th ed. New York: Norton & Company Ltd.

3)While editing the Wikipedia page, I started with having no idea of what types of information people would find useful or how to organize it. I realized, though, that most people have as much knowledge about conflict theory as I once did at the beginning of this quarter, which pretty minimal. So, I went for simplicity. I broke up the information into bullets and added a few hints as to what I was talking about. By contributing to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia, I felt like I was part of something bigger. It still blows my mind that people all over the world are going to be able to gain information from my little paragraph about conflict theory. Further, I find it to be pretty amazing that my information can be taken and elaborated upon even more, to create a better article. Though my final product is now broken apart, I feel like my contribution is something like a backbone for the current, more perfected article. This assignment has showed me firsthand what the meaning of collaboration really is.

  14. The article that I chose to edit and add onto on Wikipedia was the Deviance (Sociology) page. The URL to this page can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociology_of_deviance .
My user page can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ejv1768 .
The resource that I used the most in my edits of this Wikipedia page was my notes from the lecture we had in class on February 22nd, 2010 about deviance. I also used two different websites to cite things in my edits. I put HTML links in my edits and referenced one of my articles as well. I used this website as an HTML link in one of the sections that I edited: http://openlibrary.org/b/OL7130418M/English_convict . Another website that I used as an HTML link and also I referenced was this: [Pratt, Travis. "Reconsidering Gottfredson and Hirschi’s General Theory of Crime: Linking the Micro- and Macro-level Sources of Self-control and Criminal Behavior Over the Life-course"] http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/1/2/5/7/5/p125758_index.html .
The experience of editing in Wikipedia was extremely educational and interesting to me. I had no idea how to begin to edit on such a popular website but I tried my best to learn how and was successful. I learned a lot about editing and being able to see something that I have written on an educational website is very rewarding to me. I thought that this process was going to be easier than it turned out to be, but I ended up learning a lot and having fun actually. Editing Wikipedia relates to ideas in the course, first of all because I edited a page involving Sociology. It related to the course as well though because it shows how far the internet and communication over cyberspace has come. A freshman college student at Ohio University has the ability to add ideas and opinions to a well-known encyclopedia website, it is extremely gratifying.

What I edited under Deviance (Sociology):
-Under the section “Deviance as a violation of social norms”: I added the paragraph that begins and ends with “Deviance can be… intact.”
    - Under the section “Biological Theories of Deviance”: I broke the section “Other theories” into two and edited “Biological Theories of Deviance” and added the paragraph that begins and ends with “From his research… English Convict”.
-Under the section “Control Theory”: I edited this section and added to the paragraph starting and ending with “Hirschi worked… themselves”.

  15. The first change I made to wikipedia was under the topic of Stratification. I was reading about Max Weber, and I decided to elaborate more on his theory of class and status. There was only one sentence which vaguely explained his reasonings for critiquing Karl Marx, so I wanted to include his 3 P’s of Stratification, and his differing theory compared to Marx. The information I used was from the textbook, pages 241-242. The URL to the stratification page is:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociology#Stratification

The second change I made to wikipedia was under the topic of Criminality and Deviance. I noticed that there was nothing mentioned about the Control theory, so I decided to add information from the book, as well as information from my notes. I wanted to edit this section because I felt like I had a very strong understanding of the topic from the class lecture. The pages in the book that I used were 182-183. The URL to the Deviance page is:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociology#Criminality_and_deviance

After completing a couple edits on wikipedia, I would have to say I have never thought about making edits to wikipedia. I always knew anyone could edit wikipedia, and I never really trusted the information (Although it is very tempting to take the easy route in finding quick information). However, after making edits myself, I realize that most people obtain there information from credible sources, just as I did. This doesn’t mean that everything on wikipedia is true, but the information at least gives the reader something to consider and confirm for themselves. I think wikipedia can be a good source to use in starting some research, but I believe everything taken from wikipedia should be double checked. As I was scrolling through the Sociology page, I saw many topics of which we have covered in class, and I was relatively familiar with most of the sections on the page. I feel like I could have made edits to almost every section just off of information I have learned from the lectures, that is however, if I had enough time to do so. Overall, I thought this experience of editing wikipedia was very worth-while, and I learned a lot, not only about how wikipedia works, but even more information about the topics we have covered in class.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/JS292909

Here is the page that I edited:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociological_imagination

    The resource I used:
Appelbaum Richard P., Carr Deborah, Duneier Mitchell, and Giddens Anthony, Introduction to Sociology 7th edition, W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. Pages 6-7

This is the first time that I have edited something on Wikipedia. It was much easier to do than I first thought. I learned more about the sociological imagination than we covered in class. Researching the topic and reading the other student's edits helped fully explain the sociological imagination. Editing the Wikipedia articles relates to class by showing the action of unmanaged division of labor and power law distribution. Wikipedia is popular because it allows anyone to post articles and edit the website, not just experts. There are thousands of people who edit the website not just a few experts, so information is gathered faster and more efficiently. 10 years ago, I would have not been able to edit an encyclopedia page. Through social change and the advancements and technology, it is now possible.

I have never thought about adding my own information on to Wikipedia before. At first, I was worried about not being able to learn how to do but it was actually quite easy. I think Wikipedia is brilliant because it has SO much information and SO many sources (although some of its is not cited) that you can get so many thoughts an ideas just from one Wiki page. I think this demonstrates social change because everyone can now make one encyclopedia with everyone's thoughts and feelings on one page and new technology helps us do this. I believe a person can learn a lot from other people.

  18. I added a section on the “Discrimination” page of Wikipedia. I added a section about Sociology and Discrimination. I used a few internet sources to come up with a summary of Sociology dealing with Discrimination and how they relate. The URL to the page I edited is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination. I used parts from a few articles on the Internet to come up with a summary about Sociology and Discrimination. I cited my resources and gave them credit for their words. I used an article called “Encyclopedia of Sociology” and “The Sociology of Discrimination.” The page was surprisingly short and probably needs more added to it. I added a small summary but there should be more that is offered on the “Discrimination” page.
My experience to be able to contribute to Wikipedia was a very good one. It is nice to help improve the site and provide people with credible information they can use and rely on. I learned that improving articles and adding to them helps everyone on the internet that uses WIkipedia which is a large number people. These things connect to the ideas in Sociology in the way that the information provided on the Wikipedia pages are what people will believe and use for credible information.

2.) I did not use many resources. The pages I edited needed so much help that I was able to make substantial changes by using what I learned in class as well as the book for this course. When I used the book I sited it properly and added it to the bibliography portion of the pages.

3.)It was exciting to contribute to this. At first I thought it would be boring and I just wanted to hurry up and get it over with, but as I started getting into it I realized how much I enjoyed it. I started to relate to the Shirky book when he talked about Wikipedia and how it takes so much work to do this that people just don’t mess with it and when they do, what they have done becomes erases as soon as possible. I know I will be making sure my contributions do not get messed up because I worked hard to make the pages better and more understandable for future readers. I was excited when I could make a page better, especially when I came to the primary and secondary group page. It was a concept from class that I understood very well and was proud when I could make heading, organize, and contribute to it. I hope that what I have done will make it easier for others to contribute and continue to make this page better. I like the idea that someone might read what I have put and be able to understand a concept better or become more knowledgeable on something.
I learned that Wikipedia can be a very helpful tool. Teachers tell us that it is not a good resource to use, and yes some things might not be right and it is a good idea to make sure the information is correct, but it is a good learning tool. You can find terms to look up that relate to the subject you are researching or look down in the bibliography part to find better sources. I also learned that is easy and fun to make a contribution to something, and that once you do you might understand the concept better and you will care about it more.
It relates to the class with the book as I mentioned before, and it helps us understand ideas better that we might not have before. I have a better understanding of Sociological Imagination after having to research it more and then write about it. Also, our society is depending on the web more and more these days and being about to do things, like make changes to a wiki, is a valuable tool in a society that is moving forward with technology.

    and

    http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Social_conflict&oldid=347397143

The topics that I edited for the Wikipedia articles were the sociological imagination, how to teach the sociological imagination, social conflict, Karl Marx, and systems of stratification. First I started out by giving a brief definition of what the sociological imagination is used by my textbook. This same textbook contained a couple pages on this topic and what Mills thought it to be; therefore, I posted a quote that Mills had said describing the sociological imagination. There was nothing under the heading on how to teach the sociological imagination, so I posted an example as to how this could be made possible. The next thing I did was go to the social conflict article and talk about a branch of conflict theory. From here I gave a brief definition of what it was and an idea of what Karl Marx thought of it. Below this section on the article was a heading for Karl Marx where I posted a famous quote he said about commodities. To give clarification, I somewhat translated what a commodity was and the point he was trying to get across in the quote. Also on this article was a paragraph about stratification. I found three characteristics on the system of stratification, so I added those to the article too.

I only used one resource to edit the Wikipedia articles and that was our textbook for the SOC 101 class this quarter...Introduction to sociology. 7th ed. W.W. Norton & Company Inc, 2009. Not only does the seventh edition compare the sociology of the United States to other countries, but also a team of sociologists brings together the concepts of macro and micro sociology to give a wide look of modern sociology.

I’ve never done anything related to editing a Wikipedia article. It was very interesting and something out of the ordinary for me. When I thought of editing an article I assumed it would be extremely difficult, and I would have to go through all these steps to post maybe one sentence; however, it was rather simple and not a bit complicated. Not even time consuming really.
Overall I thought this was a good assignment for students to “communicate” with others via the Internet. Not only were we doing an assignment to get points for the course, but we were also contributing to online articles. Personally I think that it’s important for people to be able to get the information they need fast and efficiently, and the information they are getting needs to be accurate. By editing these articles I feel like I have contributed to something that all sorts of people have access to.
All the articles that I contributed to have related to the past information we have covered in class from the first half of the quarter. I remember going in-depth on the sociological imagination and how we had to do an in-class writing assignment saying what the sociological imagination meant to us. Later in the quarter we talked about stratification, and we have covered multiple theories and conflict within society...one of the theories being conflict theory.

On the Wikipedia website, I made some helpful changes to the sociological imagination page. There were already a couple of definitions for sociological imagination, but I thought the definition I learned through taking Sociology 101 was more clear, and easier to understand, so I added my own definition to the page. I also added my own section to the sociological imagination page, called “Uses of Sociological Imagination in Films.” It consisted of information on how the media teaches things in sociology, and the sociological imagination through the use of films. The URL to my Wikipedia page is: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListUsers&username=Kh231609&limit=1. The URL to the page I edited is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociological_imagination.
The resource I used for defining the sociological imagination in more precise, easier to understand way, I used the class textbook (Anthony Giddens, et. al, 'Introduction to Sociology', Seventh Edition. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc) as well as the notes I took in class from the power points and lectures in sociology. As for the information I provided on the Wikipedia page about the use of sociological imagination in films, I used a webpage I found on Google scholar (http://www.jstor.org/stable/1318381).
Contributing to the Wikipedia page was very confusing at first since I had never edited a page on the website before. In fact, I had to come into office hours with many questions and ask questions in emails, but I eventually figured it all out. Even though it was in a very small way, contributing to Wikipedia made me feel like I was helping society. It’s like what we learned in sociology, “what if our class knew what our class knows?” If we all put our minds together and help one another, everyone will benefit.

    The page I edited:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination#Legislation

The article I contributed to was on the “Discrimination” page. To further this article, I researched more on Hong Kong’s legislation and The Sex Discrimination Ordinance in 1996. I looked through many different random sites from google, but the one I found the most useful and full of the most information is this website: http://www.cmab.gov.hk/en/issues/sdo.htm.
After completing this assignment, I learned more about Wikipedia and how to edit pages. Wikipedia is a source I get informational stuff from and where I find out a lot of my research. I realized that some of the information given might not be as accurate as other search engines. I didn’t know people could go into someone else’s research and add more stuff to it. It makes me a little more skeptical to use it because some people might not have the real facts. This assignment taught me more about Wikipedia, which is very interesting for my future here at college and during my future career. This assignment connects to Sociology because it refers to people’s interactions about what is going on in the world today. After I read some of the different articles that needed improvement, it increased my knowledge on some other topics I wasn’t very familiar with such as the History of Sociology, Social order, and socialization. I enjoyed during this assignment; however, it was a tad confusing at points.

  23. In this assignment I edited five articles. Each of these articles allowed me to think about the exact way our society and those within the societies are affected by sociology. The article that had the highest impact to me was the article on violence with the youth. This is something that is increasing within my community at home and I was glad that I took the time out to research statistics and other things that contributed to my knowledge of those within my society. The social status and income article that I edited impacted the way I view athens community now. I knew there was a lack of resources in this community, but I never was able to fully understand the hardships that those within this community endure daily, and have been going through for years. Though I gained knowledge from all of the five articles I edited, these were the two that had a major impact on the way I view things differently. I understand now that youth violence may not only be because those children are bad children, but because of the nurture and care they recieved during their early childhood days.
What I used to edit the articles were my notes that i have taken in class, information from our class book, the internet, and my personal life. Though the notes that I have taken in class and the information I read in the book are very accurate, applying those things o real life example may help many understand the importance of sociology. The resources listed above allowed me to understand the meaning of the different fields within sociology, but applying them to my life and the lives of others allowed me to assure my success within the field. many of the articles were full of facts and definitions stated from another source. Very few layed out the ways they relate to a persons everyday life. This is something that I felt the articles should have, so I made my best attempt to enable this.
Going into this assignment one would think it was too much work. I feel the opposite. As a sociology major I am interested in learning whatever possible to better communites throught the country. This assignment allowed me to explore the different situations throughout the country and better understand them. Though i did not copy and paste my findings word for word, I did my best to apply them to the article with my interpretation of what I believed it meant. This was a great assignment that had meaning.

Replacement Assignment #1: Constructive Edits to Wikipedia Sociology Articles

After looking through the articles that needed help, I decided to edit the ‘Stalking’ page. I read the current page on Wikipedia and decided that the definition was not clear and somewhat confusing. After doing some research, I added a paragraph to the page and cited my findings. I used the following website to add the information to the site. It was a very reliable and easy to understand so I thought it would work perfectly here! After editing the page, I turned to my roommate and exclaimed, “Wow, that’s so weird.” I couldn’t believe it was that easy to edit a Wikipedia page. And to think that some people use this cite as a source for projects they do in classes! People who know nothing can just type anything they want, and students just like me can believe what’s there and use it in our research papers.

My addition to the ‘Stalking’ page on Wikipedia:

Stalking can be defined as the willful and repeated following, watching, and/or harassing of another person. Most of the time, the purpose of stalking is to force a relationship with someone unwilling or otherwise, unavailable. Unlike other crimes, which usually involve one act, stalking is a series of actions that occur over an amount of time. Although stalking is marked as illegal, the actions that make up the process are usually legal, such as, gathering information, calling someone on the phone, sending gifts, emailing or IMing. These actions individually cannot cause mental abuse, however, string together, they can create a cumulative effect.

The types of contributions I made to the Wikipedia page “Discrimination” was adding racial discrimination to the page. They didn’t have it and I thought it should be on the page. The urls I used were http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/racism and http://civilliberty.about.com/od/raceequalopportunity/tp/Racial-Discrimination.htm . I used these two sources because they gave me information on the topic and also defined one of the words I used in the editing. It was very interesting editing Wikipedia. I learned that anyone can edit a page and that it isn’t really that hard. I didn’t really find it very fun but I though that it was interesting that I could possibly be helping someone down the road understand racial discrimination a little bit more.

    Addition to Wikipedia:

Racial Discrimination and racism go hand in hand. They both deal with discrimination against a person due to their racial background. Believing that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race are what a person who is racist or has racial discriminations towards a specific race would think. They do not see the person as a human capable of what they are capable of doing but rather as a person of a different race who is different from them.

  28. I chose to do my wikipedia edit on conflict theory. I felt it was a very relevant idea to the class, and that it was one of the most important ideas in sociology. It also was in need of a few changes in order to make it look like the way we learned about the concept. I started off the article by talking about how conflict theory is shaped by powerful groups, and that it serves groups with the most resources. The winners tend to gain more, and also take more, because they had more in the first place. It is a sort of “winner takes all” and more scenario. I also made sure to include the three basic assumptions about conflict theory that we talked about for a while in class. Society is composed of groups, groups often have competing interests, and groups often have different types and amounts of competing resources. I of course included the implications of conflict theory; competing interests lead to conflict and groups with more resources will use those to their advantage, and that they tend to win regardless. All of the above came from our class notes, because I feel that is an important part of our class.
I also used the New World Encyclopedia online to talk about how the struggle for groups to maximize their own benefits, rather than benefit others, inevitably contributes to social change, be it changes in policy, laws or even revolutions. This is the link I used: http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Conflict_theory.
Under the “Basic Conflicts” section of this wikipedia site, I added the ways and reasons that conflict theory can begin to form. The ways suggested by this site included conflict between social classes, proletarian vs bourgeoisie, and capitalism vs socialism. I found this information at http://www.conflicttheory.com/ conveniently. This site proved that while it always looks as though there is literal conflict going on, sometimes it is just conflict between abstract ideas, such as socialism and capitalism.
In order to find out all of my information to make my very first wikipedia edit, I used a couple of different resources. I used our class notes, which I felt were the most relevant and to the point. I also used a couple of online resources because I know that with the amount of technology emphasized in this class, that it is clearly important to use it.
It was an interesting experience for me to try to figure out this whole wiki thing for the first time by myself. I could barely get my gmail account set up for myself the first time. but it turned out to not be as hard as I had expected it to be to create an account. And the actual editing of the site? Even easier! I had to learn how to navigate the edit page, but once I figured that out, it was a piece of cake. Before this class, I had never thought that I could do something like this, but now I might just edit things more often. This was a relevant assignment to our course because of the simple fact that technology was stressed so much.

    (1) The contributions i made were put towards the "Social Status" article. I briefly added on more in depth definitions of the 2 different statues, achieved and ascribed from 1 of my sources to the definitions already given. I then gave an example of each status. I added on to the Status and different societies section, Pariah status groups and simply explained why they are considered as outcasts. Then i gave to basic concepts of a status & roles from my source i used by an author by the name of R. Lenton. I edited the section Social Mobility and social status with a definition i took in class and put into my own words, then by using my notes i added some Mobility Regimes.

    (2) One of my main references used was this website named sociology guide. (3) As this being a 1st in editing wiki pages i found it to be very interesting and something new to do. It wasn't to difficult but a tad bit of knowledge and effort had to be put into it as expected. I am honestly just to see my own work posted on a website like this and that i contributed to something that's so worldwide. This assignment i based my source off of and things are connected to just one whole section we've learned in Intro to SOC101. First off i was able to connect my notes to the information already given on the Wikipedia article and add on with better information for those to be able to understand the info more clearly. These ideas i used were the same we've been taught in class, all of the terms, definitions and examples given all intertwined. Which was how i was able to successfully edit this "Social Status" wiki page.

1.) For this assignment, I found an article on Wikipedia about Social Exclusion. There was a good definition of Social Exclusion at the beginning of the article. But the article lacked descriptive details about any specific areas of social exclusion, so I added some specific information about rural areas and how social exclusion is so evident in rural areas. I felt like the article needed some examples of social exclusion to go with the definition. I think that I was able to help people make more sense of the definition by providing the example.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_exclusion

2.) I was fortunate in needing nothing more than my text book to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish. I found a section in the text that dealt specifically with social exclusion and rural areas. It was really cool because I found the article on wikipedia first and began to search the library database for articles and journals pertaining to social exclusion. I ended up finding more useful information in the text book.
Applebaum, Richard P., Carr, deborah, Duneier, Mitchell, Giddens, Anthony. "Introduction to Sociology Seventh Edition" 2009.

3.) I thought that the assignment was interesting. I didn’t realize how simple it was to edit a Wikipedia page. There was a little bit of difficulty at first but once i got it figured out it wasn’t that bad. I think it was a useful assignment in becoming part of a world wide network such as wikipedia. I have never felt like a contributed much to the “world,” but I feel like I was able to contribute a very small amount in doing this assignment. I know that my edit is out there now for the world to see. It is pretty neat that people are able to contribute to web pages like this. I think this assignment was pretty cool. I just might contribute to some more pages in the future now that I have an account. In this assignment I learned to be more technologically savvy. I thought about contributing something useful to the page and not just adding to add. I think that what I added is pretty valuable.

    1) When I got to the Social Theory page, the conflict theory section seemed to be in disarray. There were repeated bullets, and the points that were made were not made clearly. I edited the page by deleted the ‘confusing’ information and adding a paragraph that is concise and to the point.

    2) The resources that I used were two textbooks. I used our text book from class, and I also used another Sociology book from another intro to Soc class.

Henslin, James M. Essentials of Sociology: a Down-to-earth Approach. Boston: Pearson/Allyn and Bacon, 2009. Print.

Giddens, Anthony, and Anthony Giddens. Introduction to Sociology. New York: W.W. Norton &, 2009. Print.

    3) Editing a wikipedia page was intimidating because the entire world sees what you write, and knowing that other people may be using my paragraph for their knowledge is somewhat frightening. Initially, editing was a bit difficult. One does not see how much effort has to be put into typing out all the details (such as bolding words, making lists, bulleting, makings links, etc). However, after looking up my information and completing my ‘critique’ the overall experience was pretty easy.
Editing this page relates to class because we talked a lot about social networking and the impact that the Internet has had on the world. We talked about how easy it is the access information through the new technologies that we experience. Wikipedia is a prime example of this. Anyone can edit it, however there are certain stipulations (the information must be accurate, cited, and it is reviewed by people who are employed by Wikipedia to be sure that no one adds false, inaccurate information) and anyone can access it.
Overall, the experience was new, and most likely something that I will not do again. However, it was pretty cool seeing my paragraph put up on Wikipedia (I made people in my dorm read it after I finished it).

    My edit:

Conflict theory is the idea that society is composed of different groups that compete with each other for resources. The theory suggests that society shows cooperation, however, there is a constant power struggle between groups. There are certain groups within society that control specific means of production and take advantage of those who lack the control of the resources. Those who do not have the control struggle with other groups in attempt to gain the control. The majority of the time, the groups with the most resources will gain/maintain power (due to the fact that they have the resources to keep their power).
    • The idea that those who have control will maintain control is known as (The Matthew Effect)

  32. My contributions to Wikipedia involved information about inter racial couples in the United States. I provided dates as to when states passed their laws about making inter racial marriage illegal and then when they also made them legal. These dates were surprising to me because it wasn't too long ago that I wouldn't be about to marry my boyfriend. This is showing the social norms that people are following, are changing. I also found a recent article where a priest is Louisiana denied the marriage of an inter racial couple. I believe this was extremely relevant and definitely should've been on the Wikipedia page. The article can be found at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,5671120,00.html. These types of situations display that people are still adapting to the changing norms of society, or just simply that they choose to not follow them.
My resources were from online research. I found articles from Fox News and from different informative websites. I felt that these were credible resources, and that they helped me understand the history and struggle for inter racial couples. It wasn't hard to research this topic because it is such a huge social topic that so many people have an opinion about. While remaining as unbiased as I could, throughout my research I notices many more success stories of inter racial couples more than unsuccessful ones. I looked at many different resources, so they were not just from one site. Considering I am a US citizen, I really only focused on inter racial marriage in America.
To be perfectly honest, I thought this experience was slightly annoying. I don't know if it was just me, but it was just hard for me to figure this thing out. I couldn't tell it my changes wre actually made or not because I couldn't see them when I searched them when I wasn't logged in. I did learn about inter racial marriage more though, I can use a lot of this information for my project. I think these ideas connect to our class because like I said earlier, everyone has an opinion about inter racial marriages. Some people can look at it as social deviance or just following their own social norms. These differing viewpoints lead to a conflict. Sometimes violence can breakout between the groups, so I firmly believe that this idea definitely likes to our class.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network_service

The contribution I made to the Wikipedia site was on the Social Network Service wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_network_service) by helping identify the process and use of a social networking site. I edited the page saying that social networking sites tend to be places where users, you and me, share ideas, activities, events, and interests with other users. The reason I know this is true is because I am a habitual user of Facebook, a former user of Myspace, and I check Twitter daily. The focus of all these social networking sites is to display one’s ideas, interests, and to tell other users what they are feeling or doing. The experience of editing Wikipedia has been interesting. I feel now as if Wikipedia is run by regular people. I think everyone has their own ideas and opinions and experience and edit pages that they feel they know most about. However, this idea of social networking sites connects to the course because the central idea of the class is the inner workings of social interactions. People share ideas and interests and people respond with their own opinions and ideas. This is the core idea of sociology, in my opinion. A second contribution I made was on the same page, three paragraphs down. I added to this paragraph the fact that many sites have allowed users to add content from complete other websites. With this interaction, users can connect not only themselves to other users, but users and websites, to different websites and thus, an entire different group of people. In conclusion, social networking sites have allowed people to connect to each whether they are close or far away. My contributions to Wikipedia have enhanced this information to show how sites like Facebook have allowed users to share personal information and ideas to other users in the same network.

    1) I edited the page on Social Stratification. When I went to the page, I saw that there was alot of stuff about the people who influenced it, but not really about Social Straitfication. When I read about Social Stratification in our textbook, I noticed a section about three characteristics that are shared by stratified systems and I thought this would be a good addition to the page. I also added examples to the characteristics that the reader has a full understanding of them.

    2) My source was our textbook. I remember reading a part about social Stratification that I thought it would perfect for the page I edited. I also tried to think of examples to make the information from the book more clear.

3)I thought this assignment was kind of an eye opener to what I can contribute. I never really realized the amount of contributions yuo can give to the world. I felt like I contributed to something big which I always wanted to do.

    Wikipedia: Sociology Articles

Well, when I started off this project, I did so under the wrong assumption. When I first read the instructions, I thought that we were supposed to find a Wikipedia article, in the internet, and edit it so the information fir the actual facts. Seeing as I have a great interest in comic books (I actually taught a class in my High School on the subject), I figured I’d fins an outdated superhero page and update. It. Luckily, one of my favorite superheroes, The Sentry, had a large gap of events and information in their chronology. So, I spent a large sum of time researching, typing, and editing the page. If you open the URL ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentry_(Robert_Reynolds) ), you can see the page I edited. Not only did I fix numerous errors in his listed powers and history, but I also typed up nearly all the information present in the “Dark Reign” section of the page. I also added many links, where necessary, and edited a good deal of typos.
Unfortunately, when I reread the instructions as to what I was supposed to type up in my summary, I found that the sociology topics listed in the instructions were not suggestions, like I had thought, but the actual subjects I was supposed to edit. Exhaustedly, I went through the list, and tried to find the subject which needed the most work. Fortunately, though, my work on the Sentry page was not for naught, as my experience there helped me make quick work of the “Social Conflict” page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_conflict)
I chose to work on the Social Conflict page because under the “Very General Articles” section of the “WikiProject Sociology” page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sociology#Articles_needing_work), there was a notation next to “Social Conflict” that read, “makes no sense, looks like someone removed the middles of sentences.” Seeing as I am an English major, I figured it would be a good chance for me to utilize my editorial skills, and help the page to make more sense, be more legible, and thus be more informative. When I arrived at the page, I found that the description could not be more accurate.

Going through the page, I edited numerous typos, structural errors, and incoherent sentences. Using my sociology notes from class on Social Conflict, I also went through and fixed all the fallacies on the subject. Not only did I have to change the entire introduction to the page, as it didn’t make sense, but I also had to completely retype the definition that presented for Conflict Theory. What the previous individual had written simply didn’t make sense. On top of the incomprehensible wording, the definition was off the mark. In addition to these edits, I also went through and added various links to other pages.
Although I was a bit shocked by the way the two articles were written, I’m a bit shocked to say that I actually did enjoy editing and contributing to the pages. Though I’m not sure anyone outside our class will see the sociology page, I know for a fact that my work on the page for The Sentry, especially given his current rise in popularity, will be seen by many other fans. To me, at least, that’s an exciting thought. But mostly, I’m glad that I had the chance, through this class, to learn how to do this.
Probably the most amazing thing for me was seeing just how free the editing system really is, and how relatively dead-on the information seems to be on Wikipedia articles. One of the ideas that has been put forth in some of the Sociology classes this quarter is that humans are basically good, and we try to do good things. While I have always been a cynic on this topic, this assignment has made some very differing and convincing points. Seeing as I have never seen a Wikipedia page that read “this character blows” or “this sucks,“ this assignment goes to show how, when it comes to further education of others, most people will put aside their opinions and offer up their assistance and knowledge to the greater good.

The “Wikipedia” document that I chose to edit was the page on Social Change. This page had very little information on it and the information that it did provide was very unclear. The definition that was originally posted was vague and short and did no justice to what the meaning of social change really is. I edited the definition as well as listed examples of social changes to make it much clearer to readers. I also made a separate section for Social Change and Sociology to sure there was a section dedicated to sociology.

To find this information out I used our “Introduction to Sociology” book and also used information cited in the book by different sociologists. I also used two outside resources to complete this assignment:
    • Giddens, Anthony, Mitchell Duneier, Richard P. Appelbaum, and Deborah Carr. Introduction To Sociology. 7th ed. New York/ London: W.W. Norton & Company,, 2009. Print.
    - I used this source for a definition
    • United Nations 2006
    - I used this source to describe social changes in globalization and urbanization
    • D. Hakkem Annual Review of Anthropology Vol. 22: 107-132 (Volume publication date October 1993)
    - I used this source to site examples of social change
    • Ann Swidler 1982
    - I used this source to further explain social change.

This is only the second time in my life that I have edited a wiki page, however, the first time was not a real edit and it was taken off. I thought the process of doing this was actually kind of interesting because it allowed for me to share my knowledge with others in a way that all of the public can see and I hope at sometime the information I provided will be useful to others. Through this assignment I have learned that social change is happening all day, everyday and no one even notices it. Things happen that most take for granted which that is what interests me about sociology as a whole because it is the breaking down of the most common things in the world and people just take these things for granted and don’t notice them at all. The things that I learned have actually opened my mind up to the course a little bit more. I’ve always realized what sociologists study but I’ve never seen it in the light that I am now. I understand the concepts of what we discuss in class but I now feel as if I am seeing these concepts in motion. After doing the research it has occurred to me how many differences there actually are from generation to generation through social change. If I take a step back and look at the big picture, then break down everything, I am able to notice major differences from the nineties to present day and understanding those things now is a pretty neat concept to me.
