Notes for Monday, March 1st

Today, we talked about poverty. There are two perspectives on poverty: absolute and relative poverty.

Absolute poverty is when individuals do not have the means to secure the basic necessity of life. Relative poverty, however, is when individuals may be able to afford basic necessities, but are still unable to maintain an average standard of living.

Poverty is extremely important because it has repercussions for both the individual and the society. Individuals in poverty experience suffering and the possibility of the risk of ruin. Within society, poverty can lead to disorder, conflict, underproduction, and inefficiency.

  7. its quite interesting that there are w kinds of poverty. i always had the notion that when u are in poverty you do not have the money to afford any necessity. basically you are completely poor.

  8. Poverty has always been an issue that i have considered to be an oxy moron, especially in the U.S. People who are in Poverty sometimes do not do anything to try to come out of it and often have the government bail them out. Don't get me wrong I am not saying that all americans in poverty are this way but i do believe there are some who count on the government for basically everything while doing nothing for america in return. It's a shame

  9. Poverty is always quite relative- what Americans would call dirt poor is usually far better than, say, the life of someone who is dirt poor somewhere in Africa.

And, yes, the American government often does a lot for poor people, which is good in many ways, but sometimes people don't try to get back on their feet because they are supported by the govt.

  10. Poverty seems like a relative term. Someone who is in "absolute poverty" here in the U.S. will still be much better off than someone deemed to be in "absolute poverty" in a much less wealthy country. We were discussing this concept in my African Studies class, that because most of the African countries' governments have no safety net for the poor, there is no future for them... no hope. It's really sad!
