Monday, January 11th Notes

Today, we discussed social and cultural concepts.

Culture represents the meaning of "stuff"- including music, language, humor

Structure represents the distribution of "stuff" - including money/income, skills, education

The social structure is a persistent pattern in the distribution of relationships, attributes, or holdings in a population. Within any given society, there are networks, and the ties affiliated with these networks- strong or weak ties-have the ability to influence our decisions. For example, in class we discussed students' decisions to attend OU. The more strong, positive ties an individual has to OhioU, the more likely that student is to enroll here.

  1. I can relate to the in class example of Ohio University. Both my parents attended OU (and loved it), a handful of close cousins attened OU (also loved it), and so did a few of my parents' friends. I grew up hearing stories of how great OU is and how much everyone misses it. I felt like there was no better school reasonable distance from my hometown!

  2. I completely understand the concept of social structure and how it influences us. My mom went to Ohio University and she influenced me greatly. I also have a good friend that is currently a sophomore here, he also played a role to influence my college decision.

  3. My girlfriend went here. I guess the positive relationship we have reflected upon the school as well and I figured I would be happy here too.

  4. My brother went here so I would always visit him and have loved the campus since a young age. That in a combination with they have a really good program for my major made my college search very easy.

  5. Part of the reason i chose to attent Ohio Univeristy was because i have strong ties with several friends that are also currently attending. Along with that i have also met my current boyfriend at OU last quarter. Having those people here in my everyday life at OU has certainly helped me out alot and made college that much more fun!

  6. My parents met at OU and ended up getting married the year after they graduated. This definitely had a positive effect on my outlook of OU! Plus the campus is gorgeous and has a great business program.

  7. I made my decision to attend Ohio University very late in the game. My older sister is currently a Junior here and she was the one that pushed me in the "OU" direction. I always told her how I would never come here just because it is to close to home for me, but obviously here I am and I love it so much. I never realized how much I would enjoy myself here at Ohio University. :)

  8. My sister graduated from Ohio University in 2008 and she absolutely loved it. Had she not been as happy as she was about her OU experience, I would not have chosen to attend Ohio University.

  9. My sister is a junior here currently and half of my highschool basically go here also. I think that is the major influence for choosing OU. I can really relate to that example!

  10. I can relate to the OU example because i personally attended OU based on the reaction my peers in high school had towards the school. Everyone who went here told me they loved it and everyone who visited wanted to go back.

  13. I understand the feeling with the OU example proposed in class, though I didn't relate to my college selection, well at least not directly. The OU example was much more relevant, personally, to my in school activites. If my brothers was in football then I joined, if my sister did music I hit the notes as well. Its not as blunt but still very applicable.
